Since 1987, May 31st has been celebrated as “World No Tobacco Day” in countries that are members of the World Health Organization (WHO). On this day, smokers are encouraged to abstain from smoking for 24 hours. WHO considers tobacco a pandemic and the “greatest public health threat the world has ever faced.” It calls on all governments to adopt policies to prevent tobacco use, such as banning advertisements and increasing tobacco taxes.
As a foundation, we have donated to the Swedish Cancer Institute, which is dedicated to groundbreaking international cancer research aimed at finding cures for cancer caused by smoking. The Institute has presented our Foundation with a certificate of appreciation for this donation.
Let’s Not Let Tobacco Take Our Breath Away
Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of our Foundation said: “On World No Tobacco Day, let us unite in our efforts to eliminate tobacco use and its harmful effects. Let us strive together for a smoke-free world where everyone can breathe clean air and live healthier lives. Smoking is a global issue that affects millions of lives and contributes to a wide range of health problems. As we work towards a world where tobacco no longer holds power over us, let us join hands and spread the message of hope and resilience. As a Foundation, we have made a donation to the Swedish Cancer Institute, which conducts research to combat cancer, the most significant disease caused by smoking, in honor of World No Tobacco Day.”
