About Mukti Australia

Mukti Australia is an international aid and development organization with partners in India and Sri Lanka. Its vision is to bring hope and a brighter future to marginalized, vulnerable women and children by empowering them through four core pillars.

By partnering with the Mukti Australia Sponsorship Program, it is possible to transform the lives of women and children in need.

The initiative began in 1903 when a group of Australians came together to support the Ramabai Mukti Mission in India, which provided shelter, food, clean water, healthcare, and education to women and children affected by famine.

As the mission grew, so did the number of Australians dedicated to its cause. A formal Australian Council was established, strengthening its partnerships. Over the 20th century, more Australians supported the mission—whether through donations or by serving on the ground in India. Notably, several of the mission’s directors have been Australian women.

In 2001, the Australian Council was formally incorporated as Ramabai Mukti Mission Australia, later renamed Mukti Australia in 2009. Supporting Efforts to Protect Investigative Journalists and Honoring Daphne Caruana Galizia on International Women’s Day

Our foundation has dedicated this year’s International Women’s Day on March 8 to Daphne Caruana Galizia, a female journalist who symbolizes press freedom, courageous investigative journalism, and the defense of truth—not only in Malta but worldwide.

In this regard, our foundation has made a donation to the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, which was established in honor of Daphne Caruana Galizia—a dedicated journalist who lost her life in an assassination following increasingly violent attacks throughout her 30-year career.

The foundation advocates for the imposition of specific financial or other sanctions on political and commercial harassers targeting investigative journalists, including those who misuse defamation laws for this purpose. It also works towards imposing sanctions on entities that own or control media outlets and use them to attack independent journalists.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was Malta’s first female columnist, publishing under her own name at a time when newspaper columns were rare and articles were either unsigned or published under pseudonyms. She remains a symbol of fearless journalism, press freedom, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

The press is an essential pillar of democratic societies and the most effective means of ensuring freedom of information and expression. Unfortunately, there are forces that exploit journalism not to illuminate the truth but as a tool for manipulation, disinformation, and defamation. These biased and subjective approaches undermine transparency, accountability, and the principle of accuracy, posing a serious threat to journalism and the public’s right to access reliable information.

In the face of such pressures, women journalists, in particular, face greater risks due to their courage and dedication to truth. Today, independent journalists in many countries are subjected to legal harassment, imprisonment, and even assassination simply for speaking the truth. On this March 8, we honor all women journalists and women around the world who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and stand by the legacy of Daphne Caruana Galizia, who lost her life in the name of journalism.

The Biography of Daphne Caruana Galizia

1964 – 2017

Daphne Caruana Galizia was born on August 26, 1964, in the coastal town of Sliema, Malta.

In 1988, she began writing a column for Malta’s Sunday Times. Her column was unconventional for its time, blending commentary, opinions, news, and analysis with a touch of satire and humor, shedding light on the darkest corners and bringing much-needed wit to Malta’s media landscape.

She later helped establish The Malta Independent, serving both as deputy editor and columnist. A guiding principle in archaeology, “The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence,” was also a motto she applied to her journalism. Even if no evidence trail seemed apparent, she would never ignore a story.

In 2004, in addition to her bi-weekly column, Daphne began publishing magazines reflecting her diverse interests, ranging from food, design, interiors, art, and culture to business and individuals making an impact. Her most popular magazine, Taste&Flair, remains part of her legacy and is still published by The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation. In March 2008, just before Malta’s general elections, she spontaneously started her blog and immediately published her first post, “Zero Tolerance for Corruption.” The blog became the platform where she shared most of her major stories, attracting an audience of approximately 400,000 daily readers, sometimes reaching up to one million. She published her last post on October 16, 2017, at 14:35.

BRAC is an international development organization based in Bangladesh. To receive foreign donations, BRAC later registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau of the Government of Bangladesh. As of September 2016, BRAC is the world’s largest civil society development organization in terms of workforce.

Founded in 1972 in the aftermath of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, BRAC was established by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed and a group of young freedom fighters with a vision to create a world free from exploitation and discrimination. The organization operates across all 64 districts of Bangladesh, as well as in 16 countries across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It employs more than 90,000 people, approximately 70% of whom are women, and reaches over 126 million individuals through its services.

Our Foundation Has Donated Saplings To The TEMA Foundation

As the Salih Tatlici foundation, we have donated saplings to the memorial forests of TEMA (the Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, Reforestation, and the Protection of Natural Habitats) in various regions of our country to support our forested areas, which are essential for the future. In recognition of this donation, the TEMA Foundation has awarded a certificate to the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation.

Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board member of our Foundation, stated: “Soil is our shared home; it is the direct or indirect source of 95% of our food and the foundation of resilience for our habitats. As the second-largest carbon sink after the oceans, soil plays a crucial role in combating the climate crisis. If we have soil, we have forests, agriculture, pastures, and livestock. To live in a clean world and prevent erosion, we must not only protect and enhance our existing forests but also seize every opportunity to plant more trees and encourage afforestation efforts. Preserving nature should be our primary goal to ensure that future generations inherit a healthy environment with clean air, water, and soil. Commonly known to the public as TEMA, the Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, Reforestation, and the Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA Foundation) was established on September 11, 1992, by businessmen Hayrettin Karaca and A. Happy International Solidarity Day

The United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 60/209 on December 22, 2005, recognized solidarity as a fundamental and universal value that should serve as the foundation of relations among people in the 21st century. In this context, it designated December 20 as the “International Solidarity Day” to be observed annually.

On this occasion, our Foundation, as a civil society search and rescue organization, has made a donation to SOS Humanity, a non-governmental organization dedicated to striving for a world where human rights are respected for all.

Efforts of civil society for solidarity must be supported to achieve peace in the world.

SOS HUMANİTY

Founded in Berlin in 2015 under the name SOS Mediterranee Germany, the organization has been operating in the Central Mediterranean since 2016. During this time, as part of the European SOS Mediterranee network, it has rescued 34,631 children, women, and men from drowning and brought them to safety.

As a part of the European network, the organization has operated two rescue ships. As a civil society search and rescue organization, SOS Humanity is dedicated to working toward a world where human rights are respected for all. It defends humanity both at sea and on land, striving relentlessly to ensure that no one drowns while fleeing at sea and that every individual is treated with dignity.

Christmas (Noel) Holiday

Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrated annually on December 25, marking the birth of Jesus. It is also known as the Feast of the Nativity, Holy Birth, or the Festival of the Incarnation. Most Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on December 25, although in some countries, festivities begin on Christmas Eve, December 24, and continue until the end of December 25.

In modern times, especially in English-speaking regions and some Western countries, the term “Christmas” and similar words derive from the Greek Khristos (Christ) and the Latin messa (Eucharistic mass). The word messa itself traces back to the Latin missa, meaning “sending” or “dismissal.”

On Christmas Day, gifts placed under the Christmas tree are exchanged. For young children, large stockings are filled with presents and sweets, which are said to be delivered by Santa Claus.

In Christianity, the Christmas tree symbolizes the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its branches and evergreen leaves are considered symbols of immortality and are said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus during the crucifixion. Additionally, each ornament used to decorate the Christmas tree is believed to carry special significance. Spiritually, these ornaments symbolize personal virtues such as peace, love, kindness, joy, goodness, loyalty, and generosity.

Decorating the tree is a cherished family tradition that brings joy and togetherness. Each year, family members gather to adorn the tree with various ornaments, wishing for a healthy and happy life.

Our foundation, on the occasion of “International Human Rights Day,” celebrated worldwide on December 10 each year, has made a donation to FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights), an international human rights non-governmental organization that unites 188 organizations from 116 countries, advocating for all civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights outlined in the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” since 1922. In recognition of this donation, FIDH presented a certificate of appreciation to our foundation.

Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board member of our Foundation, commented on the donation: “Human rights have the power to empower individuals and communities to build a better future. FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights), which has 192 member organizations worldwide, has been fighting against impunity for over a century and working to protect victims from powerful actors such as states—the primary guarantors of human rights—as well as armed opposition groups and multinational corporations. The Federation actively advocates for the freedom of movement of human rights defenders and the universality of rights.

Founded in 1922 in the aftermath of World War I, FIDH is the first international NGO dedicated to defending human rights. The organization investigates and documents human rights violations while promoting policies that ensure respect for human rights by states.
