Our Foundation has made a donation to the “Özel Surp Haç Tibrevank Armenian High School Foundation”, which has been providing education for over 300 years, located in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul.

Regarding the donation, Executive Board Member of our Foundation, Uğur Tatlıcı, stated: “We are pleased to support the ‘Özel Surp Haç Tibrevank Armenian High School Foundation’, which has been operating for centuries to educate the children of the Armenian community living in Istanbul.”

Surp Haç Tibrevank Armenian High School Foundation

In a deed from 1706, we come across the name Muallimhane associated with a school called Surp Haç. The school building was destroyed by the famous fires of Üsküdar in 1791, 1825, and 1846. The building was rebuilt for the last time in 1892. In 1919, part of the school was converted into an orphanage, a function it maintained until 1938. In 1953, through the efforts of Patriarch Karekin I. Haçaduryan, Surp Haç School was transformed into a theological school with middle school, high school, and theology divisions. The theology division was closed in 1967, and the school continued to exist as Surp Haç High School. In 1987-1988, the school became co-educational and currently offers a four-year high school education. In 2003, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Surp Haç Theological School was celebrated. The foundation status of the institution was officially recognized again by the Directorate General of Foundations in 2012.

Salih Tatlıcı Foundation Higher Education Scholarship

The primary principle of our foundation is to contribute to the development of generations that will lead innovation and change, empowered through education.

As a foundation, we are delighted to continue providing scholarships to talented young individuals without access to quality education during the 2024–2025 academic year. Once again, we are collaborating with Darüşşafaka Society, one of Turkey’s most prestigious educational institutions with a 161-year history, to offer scholarships to university students.

The criteria for selecting scholarship recipients, the scholarship amounts, and the conditions for its continuation are determined in accordance with the regulations set by the Darüşşafaka Society.

We wish continued success to the university students we support with these scholarships.

Our traditional institution, Darüşşafaka Society, which has been providing equal educational opportunities for 161 years.

The association named “Cemiyet-i Tedrisiye-i İslamiye” was founded by Yusuf Ziya Pasha, Gazi Ahmed Muhtar Pasha, Vidinli Hüseyin Tevfik Pasha, Sakızlı Ahmet Esat Pasha, and Ali Naki Efendi on March 30, 1863, under a decree issued by Sultan Abdulaziz. Its purpose was to support the education of poor and orphaned children. The association, whose members included numerous Ottoman pashas and intellectuals, became the first example of civil organization in the field of education in Turkey’s history.

Since 1863, Darüşşafaka Educational Institutions, supported by donations from philanthropists, have been nurturing talented young individuals who lack access to quality education, shaping them into confident, responsible leaders who embrace universal values and are aware of their duties to their country and society. Darüşşafaka Society also provides unconditional scholarship support to its graduates from Darüşşafaka High School as they continue their studies at university. Furthermore, since 2014, the society has established a higher education scholarship program for university students who are not graduates of Darüşşafaka.

Support from Our Foundation to the “Taksim Surp Agop Armenian Catholic Hospital Foundation

Since its establishment in 1831, the Salih Tatlici foundation has remained steadfast in its commitment to respect and service to humanity. In alignment with these values, we have made a donation to the centuries-old Taksim Surp Agop Armenian Catholic Hospital Foundation in Istanbul, which has provided medical care to both military and civilian patients from across the country.

Taksim Surp Agop Armenian Catholic Hospital Foundation

The idea of constructing the hospital originated in February 1831 and gained momentum with the issuance of a decree by Sultan Mahmud II, based on authorization letters from Tophane Commander-in-Chief Halil Pasha and the Galata Judge. The land on which the current hospital and surrounding buildings are located was purchased by the community in 1836. During that time, a tent hospital was erected on the site to treat patients affected by the cholera and plague epidemics in Istanbul and to help control the outbreaks.

Due to the determined efforts of the hospital’s Board of Directors to establish a permanent facility, construction of the wooden Surp Agop Hospital began with donations collected from the community and the support of volunteer labor. It officially opened its doors in 1837. In 1854, after the earthquake disaster in Bursa, injured victims who came to Istanbul were treated at Surp Agop Hospital.

Despite the significant challenges posed by the two World Wars occurring roughly 30 years apart, Surp Agop Hospital managed to persevere and continued its successful operations in the Republic of Turkey. In 1968, a reinforced concrete building was constructed on the same site, marking a significant modernization effort. Since then, the hospital has undergone continuous development and enhancements, achieving a modern standard of service through expansions and improvements.

As part of these restructuring efforts, it became evident that the nearly 50-year-old building was no longer adequate or safe against potential earthquakes. Consequently, the old building was demolished to construct a much larger, more functional, and safer facility. The construction of the new hospital and nursing home buildings is still ongoing. In the meantime, the hospital continues its operations as a multi-specialty outpatient clinic on the ground floor of the Surp Agop Apartments in Elmadağ.

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, we have once again made a donation to ‘Humane Society International,’ an organization that operates in over 50 countries to enhance animal welfare, foster the human-animal bond worldwide, rescue and protect dogs and cats, improve the well-being of farm animals, safeguard wildlife, promote animal-free testing and research, and engage in interventions. This organization also strives to combat all forms of cruelty against animals and respond to disasters globally. In recognition of our donation, the organization presented a certificate of appreciation to our Foundation.

Humane Society International” (HSI), one of the world’s leading animal protection charities, has been advocating for animal welfare in over 50 countries and leading positive change for more than 30 years. HSI has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau for all 20 standards concerning charitable accountability. Through rescue efforts, disaster response, veterinary clinics, and initiatives that empower local organizations, it has taken on a critical and expanding role in combating the suffering of animals worldwide. HSI works tirelessly to establish national bans on the testing of cosmetic products on animals in countries around the globe. Additionally, it effectively and humanely addresses the issues of dog meat trade and the overpopulation of pets.

World Patient Safety Day” (WPSD), celebrated annually on September 17, aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and calls for solidarity and joint action from all countries and international partners to reduce patient harm. This year’s theme for “World Patient Safety Day” focuses on enhancing diagnosis for patient safety, using the slogan “Elevate and Ensure Safety!” On this day, patients and their families, healthcare professionals, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and civil society will emphasize the critical role of accurate and timely diagnosis in improving patient safety.

As a foundation, in support of World Patient Safety Day on September 17, we made a donation to “The Patients Association,” an independent patient aid organization based in the United Kingdom that campaigns for the improvement of health and social care for patients. In recognition of this donation, our foundation was presented with a certificate of appreciation by the aforementioned association.

Patient Safety Extends Beyond Every Aspect Of Healthcare Services And Health Policy.

Through its helpline, the association informs thousands of people annually about the health and social care system. Additionally, by engaging with the government and other stakeholders, it ensures that patients’ priorities and concerns are heard and acted upon. The association’s mission is to ensure that everyone has access to and benefits from the health and care they need to live well.

No to Violence Against Our Voiceless Friends!

As the Salih Tatlici Foundation, we made a donation to The International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT), which has been working for 32 years to combat the trade and slaughter of dog meat, in honor of “August 26th International Dog Day.”

A letter of appreciation regarding the donation was presented to our foundation by the Chairman of the IWCT Board of Directors.

Combating Animal Abuse Is the Responsibility of Every Individual in Society.

Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board member of our foundation, stated: “Animals are friendly beings in need of protection and care, and they deserve to live under healthy conditions just as much as humans do. Violence against animals often stems from human ignorance, indifference, or malicious behavior, which negatively impacts both the welfare of animals and society as a whole. Therefore, efforts to protect animals through education, awareness, and community support are crucial to understanding and preventing the extent of animal cruelty. All animals, regardless of their species, should benefit from basic rights to life and freedom. As a Foundation, we felt it our duty to make a donation to IWCT, an organization dedicated to fighting animal abuse and working for the welfare of all animals.

The International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT)

The International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT) was established in 1992 to support whale and elephant conservation. In 1998, the organization launched a campaign in response to the unspeakable brutality of the dog meat trade in the Philippines, aiming to combat the horrific trade and slaughter of dogs for meat. IWCT has been operating as a charity in the Philippines for nearly 25 years. By collaborating with the government and law enforcement, the organization played a key role in implementing animal welfare legislation that now makes it illegal to slaughter dogs for human consumption. Additionally, through its Education Program, IWCT works to change the culture and practices surrounding the treatment and care of animals, particularly dogs, in the Philippines.”

Support from Our Foundation to WHH in Honor of World Humanitarian Day

We Honor with Respect Those Who Lost Their Lives in the Line of Duty.

On August 19, 2003, Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, along with 21 colleagues, were killed in a suicide bombing at the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. On December 11, 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate August 19 as “World Humanitarian Day” (WHD). On this special day, the entire world honors those who work to promote the humanitarian cause and those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

In recognition of this day, our foundation made a donation to Welthungerhilfe (WHH), one of the largest private aid organizations in Germany. Since its establishment in 1962, WHH has fought against global hunger and for sustainable food security, operating as a politically and religiously independent aid organization. In appreciation of our donation, the organization presented our foundation with a certificate of thanks.

A World Free Of Hunger Should Be A Goal For All Of Us.

As a Foundation, we have made a donation to Welthungerhilfe (WHH), which has been working globally for 62 years to find lasting solutions to hunger under the slogan ‘One Planet – Zero Hunger.’ On World Humanitarian Day, we call for an end to attacks on humanitarian workers and all civilians.”

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of Germany’s largest private aid organizations and operates independently of political and religious affiliations. The organization is dedicated to the goal of “Zero Hunger by 2030.” Since its establishment in 1962, it has provided €5.07 billion in funding for over 12,128 overseas projects in approximately 72 countries.

In 2023 alone, WHH supported approximately 16.4 million people through 630 overseas projects in 36 countries. Many individuals are now able to harvest more crops, thereby improving their nutrition. They also have access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities at home, which makes them less susceptible to diseases. For children, WHH’s support provides

an opportunity to enhance their physical and mental development. WHH continues to work based on the principle of empowering people to help themselves, implementing this principle through measures ranging from rapid disaster relief and rehabilitation to long-term development cooperation projects with national and international partner organizations.

We Support the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Our foundation made a donation to the “United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Human Trafficking” on the occasion of the “10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.” This donation supports efforts to raise awareness about the causes and vulnerabilities associated with child trafficking, emphasizes the critical need for specialized support for child trafficking victims, and calls on the public and policymakers to address existing gaps and take action to end human trafficking. In recognition of this contribution, the United Nations presented our foundation with a certificate of appreciation.

Let’s Ensure No Child Is Left Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.

Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board member of our Foundation stated: “According to the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (GLOTIP) by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), one-third of human trafficking victims are children, and the majority of these abducted children are girls. Children are twice as likely as adults to experience violence during trafficking. Comprehensive measures to protect vulnerable groups and assist child victims are urgently needed. This requires joint efforts at both national and international levels. States must prioritize the protection of children, strengthen legislation, enhance law enforcement, and allocate more resources to combat child trafficking. They should also reinforce child protection networks and adapt criminal law to better address the needs of children. As a Foundation, we have contributed to the United Nations fund, which is doing significant work in this area.”

Let’s Protect Our Forests

For centuries, our planet has faced natural or controlled fires. Forest fires, particularly during the summer season, are increasing worldwide. These fires can be ignited intentionally or unintentionally, often in tourist areas or more secluded places like picnic spots. As a Foundation, we have made a donation to the “Pau Costa Foundation,” based in Barcelona, Spain, which works to protect forest areas—our guarantee for the future—from fires. The organization has presented our Foundation with a letter of appreciation in recognition of our donation.

A Sustainable Balance Between Fire, Nature, And Society Must Be Established

Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of our Foundation, stated: “Given the current climate conditions, we must accept living with fires as an inherent reality of our geography. Continuous education and awareness should be provided to promote fire ecology perspectives and forest fire risk management. As a Foundation, we have made a donation to the Pau Costa Foundation, established in honor of Pau Costa, who sacrificed his life in the fight against forest fires.”

Pau Costa Foundation

The Pau Costa Foundation is a non-profit global organization focused on forest fire management and prevention from a fire ecology perspective. Since 2011, it has been facilitating interaction among researchers, emergency services, public administration, private companies, and the community to disseminate knowledge and promote collaborative projects worldwide.

The establishment of the Pau Costa Foundation responds to the idea of creating a platform that consolidates national and international information on forest fires, an initiative spearheaded by a team of GRAF fire analysts, including Pau Costa. In fact, Pau Costa wrote the initial drafts of the Foundation’s project. He has been involved in the Foundation from the outset, shaping its framework and guiding its development. His work has significantly influenced the Foundation’s latest project, which bears his name.

Pau Costa Alcubierre was born on September 13, 1977, in Sant Julià de Vilatorta (Osona). He graduated from Lleida University with a degree in Technical Forest Engineering and completed a master’s degree in forest fire analysis. His professional career began in the GRAF Technical Unit of the Catalonia Generalitat Fire Department, where he worked as a forest fire analyst in Southern Europe. Pau contributed to the European Fire Paradox project by authoring the guide on “Prevention of Large Forest Fires by Fire Types.” He was among the firefighters who lost their lives on July 24, 2009, in the Horta de Sant Joan fire, along with Jaume Arpa, Jordi Moré, Ramon Espinet, and David Duaigües.

All Cruelty Towards Animals Must Be Stopped!

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, we have made another donation to “Humane Society International,” an organization that works across more than 50 countries to improve animal welfare, strengthen the human-animal bond worldwide, rescue and protect dogs and cats, enhance the welfare of farm animals, safeguard wildlife, promote animal-free testing and research, and intervene against disasters and all forms of cruelty towards animals. The organization has presented our Foundation with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of our donation.

The Use Of Our Beloved Companions As Test Subjects Must Be Prevented

Regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of our Foundation, stated: “Every year, millions of animals are used under the pretext of medical and academic research, as well as in industries like pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. These experiments violate the bodily integrity of animals and often result in their deaths. Animals and humans have different biological structures, making it unlikely that a test conducted on a rabbit, mouse, or monkey would be 100% applicable to the human body. It is crucial to support efforts to protect all animals worldwide, including those subjected to the trade of cat and dog meat, those suffering in laboratories and factory farms, and those exploited in the wild. As a Foundation, we felt it was our duty to make another donation to ‘Humane Society International,’ an organization that combats animal cruelty and advocates for a cruelty-free lifestyle for all animals.”
