Another Year Has Passed Without You

We are leaving another year behind us…

We are experiencing the spiritual peace of having fulfilled our father’s will with the Foundation we established in memory of our father, the late Salih Tatlıcı, who dedicated his life to charity and was always with those in need with his unconditional love and compassion.

We remember with respect, love, and longing our dear husband and father, Salih Tatlıcı, whom we have kept and will keep alive in our hearts since 22 February 2009, when he left us in great pain.

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, our goal in 2023 will be to continue our charity work for the disabled, the environment, education, culture, stray animals, war victims, and those who are always waiting for help, such as providing water to Africa.

After the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the war between Ukraine and Russia, which started in 2022 and is still going on, has again deprived many people of their lives, left them homeless and displaced, and caused food and energy shortages even in countries not related to the war.

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, we sincerely wish that 2023 will be a beautiful year in which love, peace, and tranquility will prevail for all people and living creatures, in which incurable diseases and the evils that negatively affect humanity and all living creatures in our country and all over the world will come to an end.

Happy New Year!

Nurten & Uğur Tatlıcı

Support from the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation to the Solidarity Association for the Physically Disabled (BEDD)

As it is known, International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international awareness day celebrated by the United Nations on 3 December every year since 1992. Our Foundation made a donation to BEDD (the Solidarity Association for the Physically Disabled), which has gained a respectable place with its activities aimed at removing the obstacles to the participation of our citizens with disabilities in social life in our country. On this occasion, a certificate of appreciation was presented by the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Kemal Demirel.

We are with all individuals with disabilities who hold on to life with the joy of living.

“International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a significant awareness project in terms of drawing attention to the fact that different obstacles are not actually obstacles in many respects, showing that each obstacle has many different problems in itself, and focusing on issues that target the contributions and success of persons with disabilities. Stating that we stand by our brothers, who work with determination and give strength to all of us with their determined stances and efforts, on the occasion of today, we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on behalf of our Foundation and wish them a happy and peaceful life with their families.” said regarding the donation, Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of our Foundation.

The Solidarity Association for the Physically Disabled (BEDD) with its History of Nearly 30 Years

BEDD was established on July 20, 1993, as a mutual aid association to provide social solidarity by contributing to the education and health needs of all citizens of the Republic of Turkey with orthopedic disabilities. It aims to provide the necessary support for citizens with disabilities, regardless of religion, language, race, region, and gender, and has become a leading association in Turkey in breaking down barriers with its work. BEDD aims to serve more citizens with disabilities as one of Turkey’s most well-known and trusted first twenty non-governmental organizations. It focuses on providing treatment, assistance, and education opportunities to children and youth with physical disabilities and pioneers their active participation in social life by raising the awareness of their families and society in general. Having struggled with financial difficulties in the days it was founded, the BEDD today delivers aid to an average of 5,000 disabled people a year. The hope has never died at the BEDD, and the service has not been interrupted. The association, which is getting stronger day by day with the support of its friends and donors, continues its activities to remove the obstacles.

Support to the People of Pakistan from the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation

Our Foundation donated to the “Sarwar Foundation” (Sarwar Vakfı), established in Pakistan, whose primary mission is to fight poverty by saving lives by providing access to quality healthcare and clean drinking water, and tackle poverty by educating children, empowering women, and helping those in need in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and across the world. Executive Board Member of the Foundation, Mohammed Rajak, presented a certificate of appreciation to our Foundation for the donation.

We support efforts to transform the lives of those in need around the world

“People live in extreme poverty in Pakistan, a friendly country with a population of over 200 million. Health infrastructure is weak; clean drinking water is not available; illiteracy and marginalization of women are very common. All these problems have a huge negative impact on the quality of life of the friendly Pakistani people. As a foundation, we considered it our duty to support the Sarwar Foundation, which strives to significantly improve the quality of life of the people of Pakistan by directing change for a positive future.” stated regarding the donation, Mr. Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation.

Sarwar Foundation

The Sarwar Foundation was founded by Mohammad Sarwar, the first-ever Muslim elected as a Member of the British Parliament and a former Governor of Punjab, in 2000 to transform the lives of those in need. It is a member and founder of the Punjab Development Network (PDN), a platform for different charities to work together for a common purpose. The Sarwar Foundation is registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1083036) and also registered by the office of the Scottish charity regulator (SC041327).

Its founding purpose is to drive change, save lives, transform lives, and create fulfilling lives for a better future. Their work is funded by donors, partners, and supporters.

Mohammad Sarwar was the first Muslim Pakistani MP in the history of British politics. Born in Faisalabad, he moved to Scotland in the early 1970s and became a successful businessman before being elected as MP for Glasgow Central in 1997, serving until 2010. He founded the Sarwar Foundation in 2000 and later returned to Pakistan. He was first appointed as the Governor of Punjab in 2013, served as a senator, and later returned to the role of Governor of Punjab for a second time.

We Contributed to the Education of Children in Our Friend Brazil

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, we donated to the organization “EduMais,” which works hard to provide children living in challenging conditions in favelas in Brazil with the basic skills they need in the modern world and to improve their social and emotional learning. The organization presented to our Foundation a certificate of appreciation for the donation.

Children do better when they feel better

“As a foundation, our priority is to support children’s education. Wherever they are in the world, it is necessary to provide equality of opportunity in order to sustain their lives by providing the children of families with insufficient financial means with basic skills. This time, we supported the organization“EduMais,” a non-governmental organization that makes great efforts to bring the children living in challenging conditions in the favelas of our friend Brazil to life. Children would be much more successful when they feel better.” stated Uğur Tatlıcı, the Executive Board Member of our Foundation, regarding the donation.

About “EduMais”

Born in the Netherlands in 1965, Diana Nijboer, Founder of EduMais, started volunteering for a number of nonprofits in Rio’s favelas and acquired experience of how they function, what they do, and what makes a difference. In the slums called “favelas,” many houses have a living room, bedroom, and kitchen in one space. Aside from the trauma of gunfights that continue outside their homes, most children don’t even have their own beds, let alone their own bedroom. Living in these difficult conditions profoundly impacts the beliefs and lives of these young people. Frequent armed conflicts mean children may have trouble distinguishing between safety and insecurity. Poverty, sexual abuse, food insecurity, and home instability are other factors that cause brain-altering stress for children. All this affects both their behavior and their ability to learn. Trauma and stress can alter a young person’s brain function, affect learning, cause behavioral problems, and ignite a cycle of violence. But not only that, children need opportunities to develop essential skills such as conversational English and Web and Game Design in the modern world. But above all, they also needed help to process their trauma and improve their social and emotional learning. Without it, their academic potential would be forever blocked and unfulfilled.

EduMais’s goal is to have its own independent complementary education school by 2026. This school will be based on the same principles that EduMais currently has: Promoting social and emotional learning, and academic and physical education. The aim is to provide a complete complementary education program to support the development of underprivileged students in public schools.

We Donated for Animals in Need in Ukraine

As the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, we made a donation to the organization called “FOUR PAWS,” which works for animals in need that were adversely affected by the war in Ukraine and has made great efforts in the international arena to contribute to their well-being and safety since the beginning of February 2022. A certificate of appreciation was presented to our Foundation by the organization due to the donation.

Helping animals who are victims of war in Ukraine is a humanitarian duty

Unfortunately, the war between Ukraine and Russia continues with all its negativities. Undoubtedly, wars negatively affect not only children and adults but also animals. As a foundation, we have previously provided aid to the victims of war in Ukraine. This time, we supported “FOUR PAWS,” an international organization that works for animals in need in Ukraine. I hope the war ends soon before it inflicts more wounds,” stated Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of our Foundation, regarding the donation.

About “FOUR PAWS”

FOUR PAWS is the global animal welfare organization for animals under direct human influence, which reveals suffering, rescues animals in need, and protects them.

Founded in 1988 in Vienna by Heli Dungler and friends, the organization advocates for a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy, and understanding. FOUR PAWS’ sustainable campaigns and projects focus on companion animals, including stray dogs and cats, farm animals, and wild animals – such as bears, big cats, orangutans, and elephants – kept in inappropriate conditions as well as in disaster and conflict zones. We are actively committed to the humane treatment of stray dogs and cats as well as to better keeping conditions for companion and farm animals. We establish and operate sanctuaries worldwide in which wild animals rescued from abusive captivity find a species-appropriate home. FOUR PAWS takes a problem-solving approach and offers swift and direct aid to animals in distress. Their aim is to achieve and establish changes in politics, society, and the economy that will benefit animals – through projects, campaigns, and education. Their work is based on scientific expertise, sound research, and intensive national and international lobbying.

We Will Continue to Support the Journey of Goodness for a Better World

“My late father would have loved establishing a foundation while alive. My mother and I established the Salih Tatlıcı Foundation to fulfill my father’s wish. From now on, we will carry out the aid and support that we personally provide under a more corporate structure through our Foundation. On this occasion, as the Foundation, we wanted to support this journey of kindness that we wish to continue until it touches the last child who cannot access water and food, regardless of language, religion, or race, which produces projects to build a better world and implements these projects in a need-oriented, permanent and sustainable way by acting together with people working locally.” Mr. Uğur Tatlıcı, Executive Board Member of Salih Tatlıcı Foundation, stated regarding the donation.

Nurten and Uğur Tatlıcı Supported the Sea Change Project

The late businessman Salih Tatlıcı’s wife Nurten Tatlıcı and their son Uğur Tatlıcı, known for their donations to the protection of nature and the environment in Turkey and in different parts of the world, donated to the Sea Change Project organization, which has worldwide activities, especially in the seas of South Africa, for the protection of the seas that cover a large part of our world and their environment. For the donation, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Nurten and Uğur Tatlıcı by the organization.

We support all efforts to protect the seas

“The documentary movie “My Octopus Teacher” that I watched had a profound effect on me. Filled with danger, drama and destructive emotions, this documentary is a gripping portrait of the human-animal understanding, capturing the audience with its eight arms and changing its camouflage to show us colors and textures we have never seen before. The Great African Sea Forest, which hosts this documentary, is an underwater wonder and the only giant bamboo kelp forest on our planet that is home to otherworldly creatures, astonishing abundance and rich biodiversity. Unlike many kelp forests that shrink, change, and disappear, the Great African Sea Forest is thought to be growing. We have tried to support these important works for the protection of our seas that cover our world as much as we can,”  Uğur Tatlıcı stated, regarding the donation.

The Sea Change Project

The Sea Change Project is an organization of media and science professionals dedicated to connecting people to the wilderness through incredible stories backed by scientific knowledge. Its aim is to contribute to the long-term protection of South Africa’s marine environment by making the Great African Marine Forest a global icon. Its work includes movies, books, exhibits, marine biology research through living science, and impact campaigns.

Craig Foster and Ross Frylinck founded the Sea Change Trust in 2012. Through hundreds of hours of underwater exploration, they and the Sea Change team have come to understand this unique environment and the community of creatures that lives within it. They also support the call to sustainably increase South Africa’s marine protected areas (MPAs).

The team’s discoveries have led to a groundbreaking sequence in the BBC’s Blue Planet II TV series; an outdoor photography exhibition seen by an estimated 1 million people; the book Sea Change (released globally as Underwater Wild in November 2021); and a documentary feature movie, My Octopus Teacher.

The donations and aid projects mentioned here were made with the personal income of the founders of our Foundation, Nurten Tatlıcı and her son Uğur Tatlıcı, in memory of the late Salih Tatlıcı, the benevolent person whose name continues to live on through our Foundation and whom they bid farewell in journey to eternity in 2009.

Nurten and Uğur Tatlıcı Support the Protection of Endangered Tigers

The late businessman Salih Tatlıcı’s wife Nurten Tatlıcı and their son Uğur Tatlıcı, who are known for their donations to the protection of nature and the environment in Turkey and different parts of the world, donated to WWF-Turkey (World Wildlife Fund for Nature) as the year 2022 marks the Year of the Tiger all over the world. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Nurten and Uğur Tatlıcı by the Foundation for their donation.

We must support any attempt to protect tigers so that future generations do not see tigers only in photographs and documentaries.

Tigers play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The tiger population has decreased by 95% compared to the last century. It is truly heart-breaking to hear that only 3,900 tigers remain in their natural habitat today. Scientists describe this figure as a breaking point. In other words, after this point, there is an irreversible extinction. Being a bridge between biodiversity, ecosystems, and humans, tigers are losing their homes due to agricultural activities in most of their habitats and deforestation for the timber trade. Today, the future of tigers is seriously threatened due to illegal hunting/trade and human-tiger conflict. If the necessary precautions are not taken, and we do not take steps to protect nature and wildlife in the first place, I am afraid that future generations will not be able to see this charismatic cat in real life but in photographs and historical documentaries. We will continue to support the conservation of all endangered animal species, like tigers, the miracle of nature.” Uğur Tatlıcı stated, regarding the donation.

WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature)

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Switzerland that aims to stop the damage to nature and repair the damage done. Founded in 1961 as WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the organization changed its name to its current form with its expanding field of work. It carries out its tasks in more than 100 countries under the main themes of climate change, forests, fresh waters, seas, species, and sustainability. The primary purpose of WWF is to stop the degradation of the earth’s natural environment and create a future where humans live in harmony with nature. WWF-Turkey continues its activities at the national level in parallel with the objectives of WWF, with donations and sponsorships, and falls within the scope of non-profit institutions and organizations.
